History of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Texas
There have been several sources of documentation on the history of Royal Arch Masonry
in Texas including the historical section in the Grand Chapter
book of Constitution and Laws of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Texas;
the article by George Lopas, Jr., Past Grand Secretary entitled
"A Historical Sketch of Royal Arch Masonry In Texas, 1897;
the booklet by Jewel P. Lightfoot, Past Grand High Priest entitled,
History of the Relations Between the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Texas and
the General Grand Chapter of the United States of America, 1943
, and two papers for the Texas Lodge of Research one by Donavan Duncan Tidwell,
entitled "The Grand Royal Arch Chapter of the Republic of Texas", and the
second by Roland J. Maddox, entitled "Some Anomalies in the Growth of Texas
Capitular Masonry."
However there are still some unanswered questions pertaining to the history
of Royal Arch Masonry in Texas from colonial times,
through the Republic of Texas era.
This report will not reinvestigate the material and facts as cited in the above
listed works, but will attempt to fill in the gaps left in each so
that a more complete history of Royal Arch Masonry in Texas can be achieved.
The basic investigative questions of who, what, when, where, why and how were
applied to the previously listed works, further research was conducted and
additional investigative leads developed, all of which culminated in the
information contained in this report.
